Katu: Exceptionally universal.

Bicycles as a means of transportation have clearly taken center stage. This is being driven by a combination of economic factors, social and aesthetic trends, and environmental awareness. The Katu line of urban bicycles (electrically assisted and traditional pedal powered) were created inspired by this new paradigm that combines these exciting times for cycling, in addition to all the realities mentioned above, and my own long experience riding very diferent bikes since I was young (when bikes had a diferent symbolic value as object) .
The Katu is a firm commitment to the new mobility, sustainability and usability for nowadays.
Design drastically reduces industrial processes not only from the frame, but from some important components to get this essential design, structurally solid and with an extremely long-lasting appearance. So… there you have Bike for long.
Its 20” wheels (inspired in my BMX race times) are optimal for steering on today’s city streets. These wheels are larger and wider than those typically found on folding bicycles, but smaller than those on a classic bike. They are also lightweight, stable, agile and, as a very important point, less invasive in both pedestrian areas and when parking the bike (at home or on the street).
Also considering the complete transportation chain, it’s important to consider that most of the trains in Europe have a special friendly laws for bikes with 20” wheels and smaller.
But 20” inch wheels are really a key factor not only for the rider. Also for environment in all senses: sustainability and citizens coexistence.
The Katu’s load distribution system enables to carry a considerable volume and up to 50 kg between the front and rear baskets. It is also designed so that the weight has practically no effect on steering.

Katu it’s produced localy in Europe, at Orbea’s own factory as a cooperative of workers (workers are owners of the company) and that makes feasible to customize from the colors to more technical aspects like internal/external gears, lights, mudguards, frontal and/or rear baskets as an option, disc brakes, suspension  fork,… according to every single user’s needs. Bikers can choose a “standard” model or a “customized made to order” Katu that will arrive to the dealer in seven days inside Europs, 15 days to America, 20 days Asiatic countries.

Everything about the Katu is unique – even its size! Katu’s ergonomics are designed to easily fit different size riders from a “one size fits all” frame,; because the more people who can ride it, the better.
The goal is for the Katu to be an essentially practical bike that is natural, easy and comfortable to ride in the city. The idea is to get more people to pedal.
But we need to consider not only Katu players. Let’s leave for the last our product design main axis and principles. As Katu have a hard commitment in terms of sustainability since the first design/production decission and for product full long live:
During the creative process, We kept in mind for each decision the advantages of making a sustainable product that is respectful and harmonious with its industrial process, use, and environment.
From the shape of the tubes; made with minimum industrial process construction standards, (avoiding all kind of extra shapes), considering the point of reducing the weding length per bike to the minimum, but building a structure with a durability close to inity. Using all the most stablished standards of the market to fit good components able to find all over the world.
About the components, all them are choosen with the same idea of reducing the material, increasing the durability, and controlling the work conditions in the origin; to built a specially honest product
Eight friendly but atemporary colours to be choosen by the final user are not a fancy point.
Even beauty has its function when talking about sustainability. Beauty makes the product more respectable, lovely, and then durable and sustainible.
